Punaluu Black Sand Beach

Just south of the Hawaii Volcano National Park you will come across the Punaluu Black Sand Beach. Ever since I was a little girl going to this beach has been on my cool list. I mean, come on! Have you ever seen a beach with black sand? So cool! The sand is black here due to all of the volcanic activity on the island. This is also what caused the white and green sand you can find on the island. So remember my advice about not taking any lava rock home with you? Same goes for the black sand.

This beach is a common place to find Green Sea turtles, or in Hawaiian honu, basking on the black sand. You should also note that swimming at this beach is not ideal. It is very rocky and can be dangerous. If you are looking for something to do beyond checking out the beach, camping is allowed!
