Kilauea Volcano

One of the things that make the Big Island more unique than the rest of the islands is the Kilauea Volcano. When you fly into Kona you will realize that a large portion of the island is not green. In fact, it is black. This is from the lava rock. You can also look out for Lava Tubes. These are holes in the side of the earth surrounded in lava rock. Basically, once upon a time lava came down and created it!

There are two ways to see the volcano. You can either take a helicopter tour and look down on the volcano or go to the volcano and hike it yourself!

This is the view of the volcano from the helicopter! I will post about the best companies and helicopter tours soon.

This is from the volcano hike. It is worth the drive to see the Hawaii Volcano National Park. Its about a three hour drive from Kailua Kona. While you are there you can actually walk through a giant lava tube! There is also a museum and tours are lead daily.

Check out this cool picture from inside the lava tube taken last time I visited the volcano!

WARNING! Do not bring the lava rock home with you! I do not care if it is 15 pounds or just a pebble. Pele the Goddess of Fire or the Volcano Goddess is said to have cursed the lava so that if it leaves the island the person who took it will have bad luck until it is returned. Post offices in hawaii have actually received mail containing lava rock because tourists got bad luck after bring it home with them. If you want to know more about the legend of Pele, Clicky Clicky!
